I think that the O2 sensor (front one) would be operating when the truck is at operating temps and the truck is at idle (closed loop). The only time an engine at operating temps goes into open loop is at WOT.

Do you have the outside temp read-out anywhere inside the truck (mirror, or dash)? If you do, does it read correctly? I think all trucks have a temp sensor (top outside of radiator support bar), perhaps yours is bad. The other possibility is the water temp sensor, does the temp gauge on the...

You may be thinking about the transfer cases, the newer ones had a bearing upgrade. If your going to the junkyards for a replacement, consider getting the 8.6". It's bigger and stronger. They were used in the long wheelbase trucks and the V8 trucks.
