When to replace fuel pump?

207k miles on what I believe is the original fuel pump. Envoy still running perfectly. No abnormal noise from the pump. Installed a new filter last year and everything looks good.

How long do these pumps go? Should I replace it if it's still working just fine?

I'm planning a 2-3000 mile trip and eas thinking it might be a good ideal to replace it before it fails.

Diagnosing a Fuel Pump begins with taking a Fuel Pressure reading as per:


...and continues with Dynamic Testing while the Fuel Pump is Running at Engine Idle and through Various RPM Ranges that can reveal weaknesses and pending failures due to Commutator Wear (Low RPM and Lower Fuel Pressure) showing up on an Oscilloscope Image as a "Known BAD Fuel Pump Wave Form" vs. what a properly running Electric Fuel Pump looks like via a "Known GOOD Fuel Pump Wave Form".

If you do decide to go ahead with replacing the pump, it is strongly suggested to use only an ACDelco or Bosch (Bosch makes them for ACDelco so whichever is cheaper). Delphi pumps have been reported to have quality issues with very early failures.

I replaced my original pump about 225K just for the peace of mind.

Mine was still good at 193k, other then the fuel sending unit taking a crap. Ended up getting a BOSCH unit and its been rock solid ever since. Its been found that the AC Delco pumps are just rebadged BOSCH ones going off the part number stamped on the housing.

IMO, replace it before the trip with a quality pump. If gonna do it, do it as soon as can to get some time and mileage on it.
