Chasing an ABS/Traction control issue...help please

2004 TB started with traction control and ABS error lights coming on and the ABS cycling when nearly stopped on dry roads and loss off power when pulling out due to traction control. Bought a scanner and checked the errors. The scanner said the steer position sensor was bad so it was replaced. Cleared the code and drove and immediately the error light came on again. A new scan said the right rear wheel sensor was bad. Swapped with a known good sensor and the light still returned. It now says I have a bad steer position sensor again AND a right front wheel sensor issue. The right wheel is the newest of all the sensors on the truck due to a bearing replacement 1-1/2 years ago. I'm at a loss. I now suspect a wiring issue somewhere. Possibly a bad ground causing false reports? Anyone have any ideas? Is there a module that could possibly be bad? Any help would be appreciated.

I think that you are already on the right track. Having had similar problems before with a different vehicle, I finally found that one of the wires had a broken metal bracket rubbing on the wire of the wheel speed sensor, giving the intermittent ABS and traction control problems. I never did figure it out until the wire snapped completely (and then of course it stopped being intermittent).

Wiring or ground would get my vote. You will have a tough time troubleshooting if it is not on all the time.

Thanks. Not having a garage to work on it I'll have to wait for a little bit warmer weather to trace the wiring. I'm past intermittent. I have the fuse pulled for the ABS system so I don't lose power pulling into traffic. I could see that being dangerous for an impatient driver. The pulsing brakes just before stopped is annoying but not dangerous. Anyone know where I can locate a wiring diagram for the abs/traction control system?

The ABS activating just as you are stopping is a classic issue with the wheel bearing itself. It is probably on its way of failing and throwing the wheel speed sensor off by wobbling inside the hub.

I once had that same issue when I installed new front wheel bearing hubs. They were CCC (Cheap Chinese Crap). Once they failed less than a year later and replaced, ABS was all good again. What brand did you use when you replaced it?

Another possible solution may be to pull your sensor harnesses at the wheel bearings, clean them with electronics cleaner and apply some dielectric grease. I had a similar problem with a different platform and those simple steps cleared it up. I was ready to start tracing the wires next, as I knew both bearings were good, but lucked out and didn't have to go further.

Thanks for the replies. I don't remember what brand hub I put on but I'll check into it. I kind of lean towards wiring at this point because of the steer position sensor. Scanner said it was bad so I replaced it. That was the only code at the time. Then as soon as that was replaced it started throwing a code for the rear right wheel sensor. That was the only code then. Swapped that out with a known good sensor and the error jumped back to the steer sensor but added the right front wheel sensor. It has me chasing my tail. I plan on giving the wiring a good going over, including cleaning connectors up, before I replace anything else. Again thanks for the replies.
