Electrical Connecter Separation Tool

As hard as I tried, with the locking tab released, I could not separate the male / female shells of the electrical connector that connects the ABS Speed Sensor to the body harness. So I made a special tool that may be of interest to anyone else facing this situation.

1. The Connector

2. The Removal tool

3. Rib and slot are utilized by the separator tool

4. Pusher plate slides over the rib of the male connecter shell

5. Screw plate fits into the side slots of the male connector shell. A flat blade (not shown can then be inserted thru the window of the removal tool to release the locking tab of the connecter.

6. Now turn the screws to separate the male and female shells of the electrical connector.

7. Here are the plans for anyone interested

Do you not know to remove the LOCKING INSERT that prevents accidental disassembly???

Remove clip, push down on lock-tab. Connector pulls apart.

SAME system used on ignition coils, and--I think--fuel injector harnesses.

Before calling out someone else's idea, you may not know the full story. Maybe he has a disability or arthritis that prevents him from doing something that you can do effortlessly. I know I've had difficulty sometimes taking those apart and I am fully capable. Although I wouldn't go so far as making a tool to do it as I would eventually get them apart, it's still an ingenious way to get them apart. This also where ideas come from for making actual tools.

You point out correctly that the locking tab is best released by prying from the back after removing the guard, but that is not the only way to release the locking tab.

The problem with separating the connecter is the male and female shells do not fit as they should with a sliding fit tolerance. The wheel hub was replaced and the new speed sensor male connecter had an interference fit into the female shell of the old body harness. There maybe an age or heat shrinkage issue, or maybe China knock off brand does not exactly fit old American.
