Yesterday it was -5 in buffalo and when i started truck i heard the jet sound. This was the first time i ever heard this sound and it only lasted about a second. The rest of the day i started the truck 10 times and no sound. After sitting all night i started this morning and again the sound.I drove the truck all day and every time i started no sound after the first time in the morning. My question is could this be because of the cold or is it just going to get worse and i should change the fan clutch.Thank you !

When first started, it takes a second for the viscous fluid inside that turns the clutch on to move to it's resting spot. Sounds fine to me but I could be wrong.

No air injection in '03 so that's not it. Probably the cold just making the fluid in the fan clutch stiff until it moves around a bit. Normal.

Yeah, I live in Tonawanda and mine does the same sound for the first 2-4 seconds after a cold startup. It is your fan clutch that is fully locked in at high speed until the fluid within it spreads out and slows down the speed.

If you heard a loud whine noise, I assume thats the power steering. When it gets lower than +20 degrees, I hear my dads tahoe, my envoy and my moms impala do the same noise where it sounds like someone who has a busted PS pump. It goes away after a moment from it running but it sounds like your engine is dying. Scares the shit out of you the first time you hear it.

Anyway, its your fan clutch and it is a normal behavior when its really cold out. Nothing you can do about it.
