Yesterday I noticed my transmission slip a couple of times. I took it to the dealer, he stated I need motor mounts and a new transmission ( they won't rebuild). It is a 2006 2wd I6 with 115k miles. Body and everything else is in good shape. They want $4k for both jobs, transmission will have 100k/3 year warranty. I am not sure I want to drop $4k into it. I am going to check a few other places tomorrow, but wondering what you guys think?

Definitely check Yelp for recommendations for local independent transmission shops. Dealers aren't the place to go if you want to negotiate what you want.

Are you having the traditional rotational vibration issue that motor mounts solve?

The_Roadie, after dealer stated motor mounts I have been doing some reading. I have the 'rough idle' at 600 rpm in gear and again shakes at 40mph. After driving it today, the transmission may be in my head. I'm going to crawl under there tonight went the concert is not 130 degress! To see what the mounts look like. If they are visually bad I might change them out then get a few more miles and opinions on the transmission.

What really made me think the transmission was slipping was the shaking at 40, i thought it was shiftingrough. Today it felt more like vibration. I've read up on the motor mounts, and will most likely have a go at it myself. Any good instructions with pics around?

Thanks

X5rdman, when my motor mounts started to go bad at about 150k, the vibration was so bad at idel in gear that one time I pulled the car over because I thought the engine was going to fall out. I've heard to only go with mounts from the dealer. The install took me about 4 hours. If you have someone to help, the install will go by faster. If you have quetions, ask and members will help.

How old is the fluid in the transmission?

The method I found most useful was,

disconnecting neg battery cable
removing alternator
removing upper bar by the firewall
removing bolts from fan shroud
loosening 1\4 inch passenger side upper and lower mount bolts
removing both upper and lower driver's side mount bolts
lifting engine from the furthest spot on driver's side with floor jack
once the engine was lifted as much as possible, loosen driver's side engine motor mount bracket bolts, thus being able to tilt the mount enough to slide new mount in
after new mount is in, tighten the bracket bolts snuggly before tightening them down, make sure mount is aligned properly before lowering the engine, install upper and lower mount bolts, don't tighten all the way, and repeat on passenger side...

after you're done installing, clean throttle body...
