PO420 Catalytic ineficiency.

I have a 05 TB with a 4.2L 6. 98000 miles. Have been throwing an ineficient cat code for a year and have been reseting it till I have to go through inspection when I planned to replace it. My TB is now running like a dog. With th pedal down I hear intake that sounds like an old Quadrojet 4 barrel but with a big loss of power. I am a drummer and with the car loaded and in cruise climbing a hil on I 80 the trans will down shift out of OD and finally end up in 2nd. Normally the trans would only end up in 3rd and shift back in OD. When empty if I floor the accelerator, the motor will rev up and hang in 1st until I lift the pedal up a little. I thought maybe it was plugs since I dont know the last time they were changed. I loaded up Dashcmd and the back O2 sensor is mimicing the front. Any Ideas?

Seriously? Buddy you better get cat off there pronto! It's plugged up! Your gonna either puke your motor or set your truck on fire! I've seen them glow cherry red and set cars carpet on fire before.

Not joking about the fire either. Happened to a friend of mine. Got so hot it set his carpet on fire thought the floorpan. Don't remember how close our cats are to the floor on these trucks. Never really paid attention. But you have a seriously plugged up cat from the sound of it. They tend to make you engine sound like an old VW bug running on 3 cylinders. About as much power too.

Although P0410 is the secondary air injection system malfunctioning It sounds like your catalytic converter is pretty much toast.

Lol, no big deal for me because I got the codes confused anyways and was answering it thinking it was the P0420

Yeah, uh, cat sounds cooked and possibly plugged. You can do an exhaust back-pressure test and see if it's in speck but you likely don't have the tester. A simpler test would be to remove the upstream sensor and take it for a spin. It'll sound obnoxious but if you get your power back, you have successfully confirmed that your cat is plugged.

Sounds like the actions of my DD when the cat was clogged. I tried to blame it on anything else, but cat fixed it right up.

Better to fix something than reset the code.
