Unknown Ticking Under Hood

Hey y'all! Lately my truck has been acting up and making a ticking sound at low RPMs. Not sure if it's the fan clutch or not but, I found a YouTube video similar to my sound only when mine ticks, it doesn't make a ringing sound as found in the video.

Doesn't sound internal to the engine like a lifter. Going too slow. Too loud to be a relay. But defiantly has a rhythm. Reminds me of the sound made from water dripping on an aluminum can under my deck when it rains. How is the belt? Any frayed edges that could be hitting something metal?
 
What about if you put your A/C on? It kinda sounds like when my mom's AC system was overcharged and the compressor was clicking on and off. Is your engine full hot when this happens or is it still warming up? Do you notice any fan roaring while driving around?
 
Can you leave a comment on that YouTube video and ask if he found out what was making the noise?
 
Take a video of your so that we know what your truck sounds like not one that is similar.

Yep I got that tick!!! Mine doesn't do it all the time but I get it a lot

I had that same tick with my old fan clutch that was throwing a code for wrong rpm, So I replaced my fan clutch with a new one, My engine light went off but that annoying tick returned.

If I remember there was a thread here somewhere stating a pcm flash would cure it.
 
The tick from my engine bay is a cracked exhaust manifold. :frown: edit: watched vid posted above. Mine does NOT sound like that...

Bro it sound to me like your belt, that's the only thing that could really make noise at that speed. Take it off and inspect it? It may have a small piece of rubber hanging off. There could possibly be something hitting the fan. Make sure the tabs for the shroud at the bottom are in the correct place. Check for debris in the fan shroud. If its not those it is probably the electronic part of the clutch itself.
 
My belts been replaced and so has the fan clutch. I'm not worried about mine at the moment. I am just trying to help out the OP

My fanclutch has been doing that since I bought it 2009.
Seems normal to me,either it goes away or the fan picks up some speed after a while and then the ticking stops.
It's only doing it in specific conditions,like if you are at a drive-in and the temp rises after being in the queue for a few minutes.

My fanclutch is absolutely Ok,by the way. I think it's a difference between different year's and probably a software issue as Roadie suggest.
 
My Envoy has been making the same sound for a few years now. I comes and goes and there is no rhyme or reason to when it happens. I thought it was the fan clutch but I am able to test it with a rag and stop it and it spins back up again. I have 170k on the original clutch so I'm sort of waiting for it to fail.
 
The problem is probably the tensioner pulley for the serpintine belt. Mine did the same thing when idling, and was more noticeable when idling with the AC on. It took me a year to find, but as the bearings got worse in the tensioner pulley I noticed it wobbling slitly. I replaced it and it stopped the ticking noise. Look closely at the tensioner when it is idling and see if you can see it woobling.

It may not be you problem but that's what was causing mine. The sound mine made when idling was similar to the sound it makes if you have a loose skid plate. It was a rattling sound. I hope that's all it is for you, because it is a cheap and fast repair.
 
Snowblazer, did you ever figure out what was causing your noise?
 
I have the same tick tick tick. Happens on mine usually about 30 seconds after starting, doesn't matter hot or cold outside, and lasts for about 15-30 seconds, then it's gone.
 
[SIZE=10.5pt]My sound was more of a rattle like the skid plate was loose and rattling. It would go away while driving, but return when idling. It was more pronounced when I would turn the AC on. As soon as I replaced the tensioner pulley the 70mm one it went away.[/SIZE]
